Wedgewick Village Wednesday 12/12

Last week, we took a drive with Cat and Miss Amaya through the dark and ominous forest to Wedgewick Village. This week, we'll get a glimpse of the shopping available to those visiting the village.

"Cat I know you'll fall in love with this place! So, a brief tour it shall be, and then on to The Purple Door. We're going to have so much fun!" Miss Amaya exclaimed as she linked arms with Cat, and then walked down a small alley. At the end of the alley lay a huge circle made of cobblestone. "This is our town square, though I guess it technically is a circle," she joked. Astoria had cobblestone streets, but they were dull compared to the polished surface that lay before them. The town square was bustling with activity. People of various shapes and sizes, who were dressed in all different styles of clothing, filled the large area. A light breeze blew and Cat noticed a flag flying from a pole in the middle of the square. It read: WELCOME ONE AND ALL. Surrounding the words were numerous symbols, some she recognized as religious ones.

"That's our flagpole, maypole, and anything else we need it to be pole," Miss Amaya explained. "At Christmas, a metal frame in the shape of a fir tree is placed there. Then it's decorated with lights and ornaments. It's so magical! People from all over come to admire it. We wouldn't dream of using a real tree though. As cutting one down to last for a month would just be selfish," she said smiling.

"Here's our shopping district, my favorite part," Miss Amaya gushed, her arms outstretched wide. Every store had a huge window in front displaying their wares. No two windows were the same shape or size. "On the left we have HAROLD'S ODDITIES. He's such a cute little man. There's SOLFLOWER to our right, which sells the most unique exotic plants! Over there is THE PLACID COW and GOSSAMER'S SPELL SHOP." Miss Amaya placed her hand on her chin, deep in thought. "Oh! Speaking of GOSSAMER'S! I need to run in there for a minute. You can come if you like, or you could just wander around for a bit."

"That store sounds interesting," Cat stated, pointing to FULL MOON RISING, which was next door to GOSSAMER'S.

"Okay, well enjoy. I shouldn't be long. See you in a bit," Miss Amaya said, smiling at her.

Upon entering through the light blue door of FULL MOON RISING, Cat was greeted by a tall, slender woman dressed in a gown that could only be described as breathtaking. It was brilliant white with small full moons woven into the fabric.

"Good morning young lady, welcome to FULL MOON RISING. If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask," she said, smiling at Cat. The woman's soothing voice enveloped her.

"Thank you," Cat said, returning her smile. After walking deeper into the store, she noticed on one wall there were shelves full of moons that were displayed in every way possible. Mini paintings, desktop stands with moons resting on them, moon globes, and moon posters. On the other side of the store she saw several cabinets full of books. Walking over she glanced at the titles. HOW THE MOON AFFECTS YOUR MOOD, THE MOON ENCYCLOPEDIA, HOW TO READ THE MOON, and THE TRUTH ABOUT WEREWOLVES AND FULL MOONS.

"Find anything interesting Cat?" Miss Amaya asked, peering over her shoulder.
"This store is amazing! I didn't know there was this much information about the moon," she replied.
"Blessed be Amaya. Is this lovely young lady with you?"

Miss Amaya put her arm around Cat, "Yes Miranda, this is Cat Colvin, a student and a friend of mine. Cat, this is Miranda, the owner of this wonderful store."

"I'm so delighted to meet you Cat! You've picked a great day to visit us. The festival this year is the largest we’ve ever had. It's true that the world is shifting and more people are finding their light."

"Well, we must be going Miranda. As you said there's lots to do today. Give my love to your mother. Blessed be. Now, it's off to see Gretchen," she announced as she started leading Cat out of the store.

Cat stopped and looked up at the sky. There were ominous looking clouds in the distance. "Looks like we're going to have a typical wet and gloomy Astoria day."

"No we won't. It wouldn't dare rain on the festival. A fair sunny day was ordered and that's what we shall have," Miss Amaya replied with a grin as she kept on walking. Cat stood there watching her move ahead, and then looked back at the dark clouds. I guess only time will tell. Cat thought, then hurried to catch up with her teacher.
I think I could get lost in the FULL MOON RISING! Which shop in Wedgewick Village would you like to visit? Leave a comment below.

Modified Monday 12/7

It's Modified Monday! Last week we took a peek into the mindset of Kenley Grayson before the draft. This week, we'll get a look at her relationship with Joey Reilly, plus the story of Joey star and Kenley star.

"'Hey, Joey?' I asked breaking the silence. 'Yeah?'
"'Do you remember the game we used to play with Dylan? He used to drive us out here and we'd sit in the back of his truck while staring up at the sky and play the star game?'
"'How could I forget? The "What's Your Star" game, right?' 'Yep.'
"'Yeah, I remember. You'd pick a star, name it, and then make up a story about it,' he replies with a warm laugh, almost like he was remembering back to a particular time. 'Do you want to play? You know, for old times' sake?' 'Sure.'
"'I'll go first,' I say and then scan the sky for a star. The blanket of tiny twinkling lights above our heads is truly breathtaking. There are so many stars in the sky that it almost makes it impossible to choose just one. I finally settle on a large bright one off to our left. It's surrounded by several other stars, but its light is so intense that it shines there like a beacon in the darkness. 'That one,' I announce as I point to it.
"'Good choice. Now, what's its name?' he asks. 'Joey.' 'Joey, huh?' 'Yep I'm dedicating this one to you.' The moment I say that, another star right next to the one I chose begins to shine just as bright.
"'Well, I'm choosing that one then,' Joey states, pointing to the star next to mine. 'That star has your name written all over it.' I laugh and so does he. 'What's your star's story?' he asks me.
"'Actually, if you don't mind, I have a story for both of them,' I reply with a slight smile. 'Oh really? Consider me intrigued,' he jokes.
"I strengthen my grip on his hand. 'The Joey and Kenley star are best friends, and have been inseparable since they were young. They've been through a lot and have perservered, not allowing  their glow to ever be diminished. Joey and Kenley have made a pact that they will always be by each other's sides, and nothing, not even death, will keep them apart. When one of them glows bright, the other one glows just as bright because they support one another, no matter what.'
"I feel Joey kiss my forehead and lay his head down closer to mine. 'Kenley Grayson. You are my best friend in the entire world. You know that, right?' 'Yes, and so are you,' I reply as a tear rolls down my cheek. There's a slight pause in our conversation as a silence falls between us.'

Just really good friends or something more? You can find out all about their relationship, how it started and what happens to them as they become The Modified.

Wedgewick Village Wednesday

Welcome to Wedgewick Village Wednesday! These weekly posts will have anything and everything to do with Wedgewick Village, the mystery behind the hidden village, the people, folklore and magic.

Today will be a small introduction to the enchanting world of Wedgewick Village. Please enjoy this passage from The Childe of the first time Cat rides with Miss Amaya to the village.

“A forest of tall, dark, and bare trees loomed ahead. After driving through their arched entryway, they were plunged into darkness. The road was suddenly illuminated by the car’s headlights, sending small animals scurrying out of their path. ‘Don’t worry Cat. They’re quick. The animals are used to this,’ Miss Amaya said, smiling reassuringly.
Looking to the right, Cat noticed a patch of sunlight shining through the tree canopy on a group of Elk gathered by a small stream. As the purple bug sped by the majestic animals, Cat swore she saw them look up and then bow their heads as if welcoming them into the forest.
‘Miss Amaya…did you, just see that?’ Cat asked confused. ‘What, what did you see?’ ‘Oh, nothing…never mind,’ Cat replied.
The forest seemed to be endless. Cat could no longer see anything through the thick darkness. The pat ahead was now only barely illuminated. Miss Amaya grabbed ahold of her pentagram necklace and began mumbling something. ‘Miss Amaya what are-?’
Before Cat could finish her sentence they were suddenly bathed in sunlight as they emerged from the woods. Cat’s eyes widened as she took in the scenery around her. Fields of brightly colored flowers carpeted either side of the tiny road. Ahead she saw small, colorful cottages gracing the top of the hill. Each one was surrounded by a small picket fence with beautiful gardens nestled inside. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Miss Amaya smiling. ‘Breath taking, isn’t it? I never get tired of the feeling I get when I come here. It’s so peaceful, so tranquil. A place a person can just breathe.’ Cat nodded, too stunned to say anything, her senses were on overload.

Why wasn’t this place on the tourist maps? Cat asked herself. She had looked up Wedgewick Village on the internet, but couldn’t find it anywhere. Cat had even gone into her father’s study to look at his map of Covington County. She used the huge magnifying glass sitting on his desk, and still couldn’t find it.
Cat’s attention focused on the sign on the side of the road. As they zoomed past the sign, it shook and the population changed to 1000.”

Trivia Tuesday

Every Tuesday, I will post a piece of trivia either from the books, on characters or on Carol & Adam. I thought this would be a fun way to get to know the books, characters and authors better! I may even post a question and see who knows their C.A. Kunz Trivia!

Molly C. Quinn
Today's trivia involves Cat Colvin, our heroine from The Childe Series.
  • Cat was born on February 2nd, 1995
  • Her star sign is Aquarius
  • She is a Saturday childe
  • She was born on a Wiccan day of power, the Sabbat known as Imbolc
Description of an Aquarian (as provided by Carol Golder's Star Signs):
  • Positives: hates to fit into any one slot, unpredictable, unconventional, original, independent, idealistic, altruistic, unique, intellectual, non-conformist, uncompromising, truth-seeking, reforming, progressive, highly intuitive, talented, often very scientific, very friendly, truly humanitarian
  • Negatives: eccentric, total rebel with or without a cause, far too cool, aloof and detached, erratic, irrational, absent-minded, unstable, too idealistic and dogmatically fixed in your own opinions and sometimes much too reckless
As a Saturday's childe, Cat is to be wise, professional, subdued, dedicated, practical and/or morose, suspicious, complaining, jealous, timid. (provided by Elbert Wade)

Here is a little information on the Wiccan Sabbat Imbolc on which Cat was born.
 (provided by Witchvox
  • February 1st or 2nd
  • also known as: Candlemas, Imbolg, Imbolgc brigantia, Lupercus, Disting
  • IMBOLC: The earliest whisperings of Springtide are heard now as the Goddess nurtures Her Young Son. As a time of the year associated with beginning growth, Imbolc is an initiatory period for many. Here we plant the "seeds" of our hopes and dreams for the coming summer months.
So do you think all these attributes make up the personality of  The Childe known as Cat Colvin?

Modified Monday

The first post for Modified Monday contains a couple of passages from the book that gives us a glimpse into the mind of our heroine Kenley Grayson at the time of the draft.

"'Don't worry, Little Bit. I'll be back before you know it.' Those were the last words my brother said to me before he went off to war. I never heard his voice again."
"Who knew our first encounter with a  life form outside Earth would cause an intergalactic war to break out? We definitely weren't prepared for it, that's for sure. It has the entire world scrambling to find anyone to fight for our unified cause. No one knows exactly why the war even started in the first place, but once it did, we lost a lot of soldiers. So Earth's government, the Allied Federation, decided it'd be a good idea to implement a worldwide military draft for any able seventeen-year-old.
"Those damn Bringers have a lot to answer for, and I plan to take the fight directly to them. Of course I'm scared out of my mind, but I have to do this for my family. For our survival. For my little brother, so he doesn't have to make the same sacrifice in three years."

It sounds like Kenley has the weight of the world on her shoulders. To see what happens to Kenley during the draft, pick up your copy of "The Modifed" on sale today for 99¢ at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Modified Monday

I've decided to start doing a weekly post on "The Modified" every Monday. It will either be quotes from the book, character profiles, conspiracy theories, discussion topics or news about the book! Look for my first post later today!
